In its country of origin (Mexico) the plant was pollinated thanks to the work of an insect. When, during the XVIII century, vanilla cultivation was introduced in Madagascar, in the Comore islands and to Reunion, the insect didn't follow the plant: since then in has been pollinated by hand, by specialised workers called "marieuses." 
Its fruit is a very perfumed brown pod that has assumed an important role for a lot of populations of the tropical areas, because it is sold for aromatising sweets and ice creams.
The Italian orchids are exclusively earthlings, on the contrary to the tropical kinds, which are for the majority epiphytes. Even though not very showy they can form particular odours: for instance some kinds of Nigritella, typical of a mountain habitat, have a chocolate perfume; Barlia robertiana, found only in the Mediterranean, is beautiful and has an odour that evokes a "feeling of cleanliness."
It is used in fragrance compositions, especially in the perfumes of Guerlain.
