	I would like some information regarding amber which is used in the fragrance industry: different types, origins and descriptions. (sent by franca il 14/02/2009)

With the generic term amber, various substances are indicated which have very different origins.

The most famous and rare is grey amber, a gastro-intestinal secretion from the sperm whale which ocean currents sometimes deposit on beaches. Since it is almost un-findable, it is extremely expensive and is used less and less in creations.

The so-called Amber actually used in the fragrance industry is a combination of Vanilla and balsamic notes (Benzoin, Tolù Balm, Perù Balm, Copahu …), which are generally present in the form of resins or gums which are obtained from trees and bushes such as styrax. These combinations give compositions embracing touches of soft, silky sensuality.

Finally the fossil resin in which very old insects, leaves, woods and pollens can be found, due to a process which lasted for millions of years is transformed into yellow amber, a semi-precious stone which is odourless.
