Other professions in the fragrance industry

The tip of the iceberg in this industry is the profession of the “nose” which undoubtedly offers the greatest possibility for creative expression but also limited real professional opportunities: “A profession with many candidates but few elite”, whilst the fragrance industry is an articulated and sophisticated system which gives many professional opportunities, which encompass a wide range of specialisations in function with individual vocations and which all require an in-depth preparation.

As a support to a possible future career orientation or a professional turning point, we’ve dedicated this space to the possible careers that can be followed in the fragrance and cosmetic industries, considering that in an ever competitive world, the road towards company or individual excellence passes via the construction of an in-depth professional knowledge base.

    • Vocation “Creation”
We’ve grouped together in this section the major part of the professions linked to fragrance compositions and their commercialisation. These activities are carried out in the “fragrance and aroma  producing/supplying” industries, some in international creation centres, some in the commercial branch offices scattered around the world. Many of these groups provide internal training for their employees, which when added to a general scholastic education, this specialised knowledge already acquired can constitute a competence factor when entering the job market. In the technical sector, alongside the  Fragrance Creator, weighing the elements of the formula and following the correct functioning of the activity is the  Perfumer’s Assistant. The creative activity is carried out in a laboratory where all the various fragrance applications   in their final form are prepared in samples for the client and in order to verify the various stability criteria: mixed in alcohol, inserted into base product for persona hygiene and cosmetic products or home care products.  This department offers technical positions such as Head of Laboratory, Technician, Laboratory Assistant.
In the same way as its creative qualities, a fragrance must correspond to the expectations of the client or market and therefore be coherent with requests and tendencies. It is the Marketing Department who supplies the Creator, as well as the company’s clients, with various information regarding the market, consumer habits and evolution, competitor monitoring, often completed with a section dedicated to Consumer Insight (understanding the consumer). The “Evaluation”Finally, the commercial development is handled by the sales structure, which requires an in-depth knowledge of the market, as well as the whole olfactory environment team seeks to support the Creator in the definition of the fragrance structure most appropriate for each project and evaluates with him all the technical performance aspects requested for the product.  A very precious function …..

    •  Vocation “Production
To transform the creative work into an industrial result is a complex job which is the responsibility of  Production, Quality control, Purchasing, etc, to be found in the area of the fragrance and aroma supplying/producing companies and third party companies for the production of the finished product.

    • Vocation “Brands
Since the end of the 1800s,creative activity is mainly carried out for “Fragrance Houses”, which then undertake the commercialisation in the context of one or more Brands, which in turn gives rise to a myriad of functions dedicated to giving value to the brand and developing product lines, as well as the awareness of the company itself. Many of the professions cited differ from those presented in the above section only in the fact that they are part of a different commercial circuit, requiring the same professional capabilities and specialisation levels. All levels of the marketing profession:

      •  R & D and Product development Departments
      •  Cosmetologists
      • Managers and teams for PR specialists who operate within the companies or in specialised offices.

    • Vocation “Commercial”
Developed as a service to the Brand or within a retail outlet environment, the activity of diffusion of information and culture, sales support, client advice, are all integral to the commercial function, which can only benefit from an in-depth knowledge of the proposed product.
Dedicated to optimising the knowledge of the retail outlets about a certain brand, range or type of product or to advise a consumer in terms of choice and use, there are the professions such as:

      • Trainer
      • Animator/Beauty & Fragrance Consultant
      • Which constitute a support and complete the activity in the Sales area.
      • Sales agents and Sales Director
      • Retail Manager/owner and  Sales Adviser
