Carthusia"

A legend tells that in 1380 the Priory Father of the Certosa di San Giacomo, in preparation for the visit of Giovanna D'Angiò to Capri, gathered and placed in water a mixture of the most beautiful flowers to be found on the Island. As he was about to throw away the flowers after they had been in water for some days, the Prior noticed that the water had acquired a fragrance: the first Capri fragrance. In 1948, the then Prior of the Certosa found some of the old fragrance formulas made by San Giacomo and with a Papal Licence, he shared them with a chemist from Piedmont. Thanks to these recipes, the chemist managed to create a small artisan laboratory and called it "Carthusia" which means "Certosa". Today the tradition continues: the methods are the same as those used by the Carthusian monks and the finished product is then hand wrapped.
