It all began with coumarin. The first synthetic molecule ever to be used in a fragrance, was "discovered" in France in 1878 and extracted from the Tonka Bean, which originates in the north eastern regions of Brazil. For people with average olfactory sensitivity it evokes the memory of something known, considering that its structure is formed by nine carbon atoms, six hydrogen and two of oxygen it can be found in all male perfumes: it emanates a sweet odour, herbal and spicy, similar to vanilla. A more sensitive and careful nose can also trace hay and tobacco, something clean yet at the same time warm.
The seeds of the Tonka tree are dipped in rum and subsequently dried. During this procedure they are covered in white crystals from which the pure essential oil is extracted. In the food industry it is used as an aroma.
