Citrus

It can also be called “Fraîche” or “Citrus Fraîche” or Hesperidia and refers to compositions which are rich in citrus fruits, which can be traditional Mediterranean fruits such as bergamot, lemon, mandarin, orange and grapefruit as well as more exotic ones such as kumquat, lime and yuzu. The part of the fruit which is used is the peel or rind, which is treated by pressing or expression.

This is the family which was brought to life Aqua Mirabilis by Giampaolo Feminis which then evolved into the more traditional Eau de Colognes, such as the famous Kölnisch Wasser 4711 or l’Eau du Coq by Guerlain or the Italian Acqua di Parma and many others. During the ‘60s it was modernised with the arrival of the use of Hedione, fresh flowers and aromatic notes and transformed into Eau Fraîches, with  Ô by Lancôme and Eau Sauvage by Dior leading the way.  In1988 the Dihydromircenol / citrus accord, which was the origin of Cool Water by Davidoff, marked the beginning of the “Nouvelle Fraîcheur” facet, which, beginning with Acqua di Gio by Armani led to a decisive change in the concept of freshness for men’s fragrances.   The much more subtle impression given, around the mid ‘90s, by the “musk” notes, marked the success of fragrances such as  CKOne by Calvin Klein or Cologne Verte by Thierry Mugler.

These natural sparkling notes, express the sense of pureness, dynamism and lively freshness. Their bouquet when completed with tones of white flowers and musky notes has more feminine inflections.  In male fragrances they are often coupled with marine, ozonic, green, woody or lavender notes. There are also many fragrances which belong to this family which can be used by both men and women.
