Holiday reading
For a summer break characterised by fragrances, for aspiring creators and all those who have a personal or professional interest in this universe, we recommend two books which have been recently published, written by two very experienced professionals, both originating from the European fragrance cradle: Grasse. Two pathways which intertwine in the twists and turns of prestigious careers, full of challenges and through the eyes of two different authors illustrate the same transportation for the profession and the same vision of current changes.

In the book “Le parfum” edited by PUF in 2007 Jean-Claude Ellena, perfumer at the  Maison Hermés and founder of the Different Company in which his daughter Cèline is now artistic leader, paints the story of fragrance. From the beginning of the modern perfumery at the start of the 1900s up until the most recent technical innovations, technologies and strategies, he touches with skill and passion all the aspects involved in the realisation of a fragrance-project.
Starting from how the olfactory system works , through the knowledge of the raw materials, the acquisition and mastery of the profession, the comprehension of the entire creative process of a fragrance, Ellena’s story touches his great professionalism, his personal pathway of discoveries and creations carried out with pragmatism and heart but above all with spirit.

As he himself declares, Maurice Maurin became a “nose” by “geographic chance”, but in the years that followed he was able to reveal all his eclectic skills as a “fragrance globe-trotter”.  His book “La saggezza del creatore di profumo”(the wisdom of the fragrance creator) paints with typical Provence-style “verve”, in between personal anecdotes and technical notes, a professional panorama which is distant from idealisms and common theories. A work which is colourful and poly-sensorial which highlights the consequences and the motivations behind the creation of modern fragrances, in all their forms.  (Maurin, M. - La saggezza del creatore di profumi – Edizioni La Meridiana 2007)
