Discovering perfume made in Italy

Perfume has been with us for over four thousand years, sometimes accompanying us in the most unusual of situations, associated with our memories and our desires. Its history is part of the history of the whole world’s cultures.
The word ‘perfume’ comes from the Latin per fumum, which means “through smoke”, because the first perfumes were aromatic herbs that were burned to honour the gods and ancestors.
Perfume is found to fulfil two primordial functions everywhere: religious and profane. Fragrances and make-up were used for their magical and therapeutic virtues long before they ever became part of the weaponry of seduction.
The art of blending odours came from the Middle East, whence it spread westwards, to Greece and Rome, before it ventured eastwards into Asia along the routes of the aroma caravans.
The first centre of perfumery in Europe was Renaissance Italy, which maintained its primacy until the eighteenth century, when it passed to France, especially the area around Grasse.
It took centuries and revolutions, the genius of craftsmen and transformations undertaken by entrepreneurs, before perfume, associated with the names of Italy’s great fashion designers as an essential complement to their styles, focused international interest on the art of creativity Made in Italy.
Because perfume is an impalpable emotion that triggers memories, images and sensations – whether pleasant or unpleasant – that all help us rediscover our intimate selves.
